There is a variety of groups on either side: Euzkadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA), Basque Fatherland and Liberty, is a violent group claiming to be in favor of Basque autonomy. Founded in 1959 with aim of an independent Marxist Basque homeland in the Spanish-French border area (northern Spanish Provinces of Vizcaya, Guipuzcoa, Alava, and Navarra; and south-west French Departments of Labourd, Basse-Navarra, and Soule). ETA has killed over 800 people and primarily targets Spanish officials. BVE, ATE, GAL, and other groups are labeled as ``pro-Spanish'' (or perhaps ``anti-Basque'' or at least ``anti-ETA'').
