Morocco
Here is my trip to Morocco —
jump around in any order or follow the sequence of my trip.
I began in
Casablanca
with its Art Deco architecture and
gigantic Hassan II Mosque.
From there I took the high-speed train to
Tangier,
wandered through its medina,
visited the surprisingly interesting American Legation
(the first U.S. overseas diplomatic mission,
in the first country to recognize the U.S. as a country),
and saw where some Beat Generation figures spent time.
From there I took a high-speed train and a regular train to
Meknès,
where I visited the impressive kasbah,
wandered through its medina,
visited a wonderful music museum,
and took a day trip to
Volubilis.
I took the train on to
Fez and
wandered through its medina, the world's largest car-free zone.
From there it was an overnight sleeper train to
Marrakech
and the Mosque at the End of the World,
plus the Saadian tombs and more medina wandering.
I was headed southeast into the desert,
and Marrakech was as far as trains went in that direction.
So it was onto a bus through the
Atlas Mountains to
Zagora.
From there I got a ride in a shared car, further southeast to
M'Hamid el Ghizlane
and the end of paved roads.
From there, I ventured into the desert to
Erg Chigaga,
Morocco's largest erg or dune field.
