Exploring Eastern Crete
I spent a night in Ierapetra to
break up the trip across southern Crete.
Napoleon also spent time there,
staying in a house just one street in from the waterfront.
I continued east along the coast, then crossed
south to north through a less rugged area.
But there were still plenty of steep grades and tight turns.
I stayed four nights in Sitia,
a great base for exploring far eastern Crete.
There are Minoan sites nearby at Zoa and Tripitos,
and of course many churches in the surrounding villages.
Roussolakkos and Palaikastro
are a cluster of Minoan sites on the far eastern coast of Crete.
Itanos was an ancient Greek port city
near Crete's northeastern tip.
In Byzantine Christian times it had a large basilica.
